Communication Skills Workshop - Pene Herman-Smith BA

Candidates will also participate in a short workship with Pene, who will impart some helpful hints in approaching the communication skills station.

Medicine and Communication have dominated Pene’s career from an early age. Born to perform, acting success came at school and later in Community theatre. A secretarial course led to London in the 60’s, and a joyful job as P.A. to the Medical Editor of the innovative ‘Medical News’, supported by the ‘Practitioner’. A move to Scotland saw her working as Receptionist in a busy surgery, where she encountered both sides of the doctor/patient relationship. Her later B.A. Degree in Dramatic Studies led to a career of professional acting and eventually to the Wolfson Medical School (University of Glasgow). Here she worked closely with Professor Phillip Cotton, developing and presenting their new Communication Skills Training Programme from 2000 onwards. Using actors in roleplay situations has become big business, and in the medical field has brought vital knowledge and understanding of the importance of good communication in the healing process.
